BSc, JD · Founder, Abaki Law · Canadian Competition Law
Joshua Abaki is one of Canada's recognized competition law practitioners — bringing eight years of Big Law experience, landmark Tribunal victories, and deep regulatory expertise to a focused boutique practice.
Joshua is a Canadian competition law expert recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada™ since 2024. His practice focuses on all aspects of Canadian competition law, including mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment, distribution practices, advertising and marketing, abuse of dominance, competition compliance, and competition class action litigation.
Prior to founding Abaki Law, Joshua was a Senior Associate in the GCR100-ranked Competition, Antitrust and Foreign Investment Review Group at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), one of Canada's largest law firms — where he practised for eight years. His practice spanned the full spectrum of Canadian competition law — cartel investigations, merger review, abuse of dominance, advertising and marketing compliance, and private actions.
Joshua has appeared before the Competition Tribunal, Ontario Superior Court, Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal.
Joshua's Tribunal experience is particularly distinguished. He acted in precedent-setting litigation that clarified how the "general impression test" in false and misleading advertising is applied — an interpretation that continues to shape enforcement today. He was also at the forefront of one of Canada's most significant price-fixing matters, acting for Loblaw Companies Limited and George Weston Limited in criminal and civil proceedings arising from the bread price-fixing investigation.
Beyond practice, Joshua co-authors Competition Law Practice Advisor (LexisNexis) — a leading practitioner resource — and has contributed to Dimock's Intellectual Property Disputes: Resolutions and Remedies and to Managing Privacy in a Connected World. He is also a published author with competition publications on both Thomson Reuters' WestLaw and LexisNexis.
